On-going project - Wastewater Treatment with Native Plant Project in Jordan Lake (WTNP)

Goal:

Recover, repair, and develop sustainable maintenance strategies for a water-treatment system at Jordan Lake Business Park Association (including Jordan Lake School of the Arts, JLSA), ensuring water quality exceeds NC state minimum standards.

Background

A Water Recovery System, developed by Dr. Halford House and a cooperative team in the middle of 1990’s, originally met all regulatory requirements and treated wastewater from JLSA and nearby businesses. Over time, the system deteriorated due to lack of maintenance knowledge. Dr. Halford has since provided guidance for repair and future upkeep.

Objectives

EcoPlantora research team supervised by Dr. Colleen Doherty will research and recommend plant species for phytoremediation, consult with JLSA and Dr. Halford, then source, install, and maintain

selected plants. A care manual will be developed. Additional experimental projects (e.g., plant tolerance to pH or soap) will be integrated over time.

Tasks

  • Research & Selection: Identify suitable native and non-invasive plants for each treatment stage, with justifications, pros/cons, size, and quantity

  • Planning & Sourcing: Estimate costs, find plant sources (e.g., nurseries, state parks), and design an optimized implementation plan

  • Installation & Maintenance: Set up the system, plant selected species, create a watering routine, and write a maintenance manual

  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Track plant growth, soil and water quality, update documentation, reassess plant effectiveness, and run experimental tests
